Tofu cat litter: what it is, how it compares to clay, and whether it's worth it
Tofu cat litter is a plant-based litter made from soybean fiber and plant starch pressed into small pellets that clump when wet. It's light, low in dust, and many tofu litters — TellTail included — can be flushed in small amounts where the plumbing allows.

What tofu litter is made of
Tofu litter starts with soybean fiber — the pulp left over after soy milk and tofu are made — mixed with plant starch and pressed into short pellets. When urine hits the pellets, the starch binds them into a firm clump.
TellTail is made mainly from plant fibers and plant starch, with a natural mineral binder and a food-grade pH indicator. No silica gel crystals.
Tofu vs clay at a glance
| Tofu litter | Clay litter | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Plant fiber and starch | Bentonite clay |
| Weight | Light | Heavy |
| Dust | Low | Often dusty when poured |
| Clumping | Firm clumps | Firm clumps |
| Flushing | Many tofu litters can be flushed in small amounts | Never flush clay |
| Tracking | Pellets can stick to paws less than fine clay, but larger pellets can scatter | Fine granules track easily |
| Price per pound | Higher | Lower |
Is tofu litter safe?
Tofu litter is made from plant materials and is generally a good choice for homes that want to avoid clay dust. TellTail is suitable for kittens from 12 weeks old and for multi-cat homes.
Like any litter, it isn't food. If your cat regularly eats litter, mention it to your vet — the habit itself can be a sign worth checking.
Odor control
Tofu pellets absorb urine and lock it inside the clump, which is where most odor comes from. Scoop at least once a day and top up as needed. TellTail is lightly scented.
Can you flush tofu litter?
Many tofu litters are designed to break down in water, so urine clumps can go down the toilet a little at a time. TellTail is Flushable\*. Don't flush if you have a septic system or older or low-flow plumbing, and always put cat droppings in the trash. More in our flushing guide.
The honest downsides
- Price. Tofu litter costs more per pound than clay, though you use less by weight.
- Texture change. Some cats used to fine clay need a gradual switch. See how to switch litter.
- Keep it dry. Store the bag sealed; tofu litter softens if it gets damp before use.
The color-changing option
Most tofu litters are plain. TellTail adds a food-grade pH indicator, so the litter also changes color when your cat's urine pH moves outside the normal range — a health monitoring cat litter made from tofu. See the color chart for how it reads.
Flushable* — TellTail’s plant-based clumps break down in water, so flush the clumps a little at a time. Place cat droppings in the trash, not the toilet. Not recommended for septic systems or older / low-flow plumbing.
