On a normal day it simply stays the colour it started — the litter holds its beige right across the comfortable middle and only begins to shift below about 5.3 or above 7.7. Acidic
Acidic urine is the chemistry calcium-oxalate crystals prefer. Diet, some supplements and plain dehydration all push pH down.
Already outside the range a healthy cat sits in. A new food or supplement can push it here — but so can trouble that's only just starting, and the colour alone can't tell you which. Don't file it under "probably nothing": seen twice, it's a call to your vet.

Normal
No colour, no alert, nothing to interpret. A healthy cat typically sits around 6–7.5, comfortably inside the band where the indicator stays put.
This is what you'll see almost every day — and it's exactly what you want from it. Nothing to do here.
Alkaline
Alkaline urine is the chemistry struvite crystals favour, and it can come alongside a urinary infection.
Already outside the normal range. pH does drift up for a few hours after a big meal, so check the next morning — but if the green is still there, it wasn't the meal. That's a call to your vet.
A reading this high is a red flag, not a fluctuation. Call your vet the same day.
Why this is worth watching at all
Two levels, two different responses. Orange around 5 or green around 8 means the pH has already left the range a healthy cat sits in — a warning, not a curiosity. Diet explains some of them and early trouble explains the rest, and the colour alone can't tell you which; seen twice, it's a conversation with your vet. Deep red at 4.5 or below, or cyan at 9 or above, is a different matter: far enough out to warrant a same-day call rather than a few more days of watching, because urinary problems in cats get worse fast.
Cats are built to hide discomfort. Urinary trouble is one of the most common reasons they end up at the vet, and by the time the signs are obvious — straining, frequent trips, going outside the box — it has usually been building for a while.
The litter box is the one place your cat visits every single day without fail. It's the natural place for something to quietly keep watch, with nothing extra for you to do.
What matters is the pattern, not a single day. Food, water intake and time since the last meal all move pH around. A colour that keeps coming back over several days is the signal — that's when you mention it to your vet, ideally with a rough note of what you saw and when.
One thing that isn't about pH at all: a cat straining in the box and producing little or nothing — especially a male cat — needs a vet the same day, whatever colour the litter is. That one is an emergency.
